FAQs

About a week or two, at least. Of course it doesn’t take two weeks to make a cake, but most weeks we have a large number of custom cakes, decorated sugar cookies, and wedding cakes that we are working on. We have to stop taking new orders when we reach the limit for what our staff can do for a given weekend. A good rule of thumb is this: when you know the date of the celebration, give us a call to get on our schedule.
One exception to this is our Create-Your-Own Birthday Cakes. These gorgeous customizable cakes can be ordered online with just four days’ notice. To Create Your Own Birthday Cake, please click here.
- If you’re looking for a Create-Your-Own Birthday Cake or Cupcakes by the Dozen, (birthday cakes or cupcakes that are not themed), we invite you to order online here on our website.
- If you have a wedding coming up and would like to come in for a Tasting and Consultation, please read the “We’re Getting Married!” section below.
- For anything custom designed – themed cakes, cupcakes, or decorated cookies – please call or stop by the shop. We can talk about the design and details, and we’ll work up a price. If you have found a picture online of something you’d like us to make, bring it with you or you can send it by email at info@thecakehouse.com (along with the number of guests, and the date you need it for), and we’ll be happy to work up a quote for you. We do have minimum order quantities for cupcakes, brownies, and similar treats (1 dozen per flavor) and for decorated sugar cookies (6 per shape).
Almost always, no, you should not refrigerate cake. Cakes do not like changes in temperature or humidity, and putting them in the refrigerator will change both, and result in a hard and dry cake. Also, most of our cakes are butter-based, and therefore the cake will harden in the fridge just like butter does.
In just a few cases, some ingredients will dictate that the cake should be refrigerated, and our staff will let you know if your cake does require refrigeration. Most often, your cake should go from our room-temperature shop, to your room temperature car, to your room temperature home or venue. We recommend leaving it in the box or container until just before serving time.
Absolutely! Our Tasting and Consult Appointments are offered at no charge for weddings of 50 guests or more, and must be booked at least one week in advance. These appointments usually last about an hour. During the appointment we provide four cupcakes in a variety of flavors, usually chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and almond, and this allows you to evaluate our skills as bakers, even if the flavor you ultimately decide on is something different.
At that meeting we will also go over the size and design of your cake, whether we’re starting with a specific image you’ve pinned, or your design ideas are wide open. We will provide a written quote for you, and if you’re ready to book we can do that on the spot, or if you’re still checking around you can get back with us later. To place the order, a deposit of at least 50% is required, with the balance due no later than the week before the wedding.
These consultations are typically held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between 10am and 6pm. (Thursday through Saturday are reserved for getting cakes ready!) After that appointment, if you request a follow-up consultation with drawings and/or tastings of your specific flavor, a more in-depth consultation with tasting is available for a $50 fee.
Customer satisfaction is highly important to us; in fact, it is why we exist as a business. If you are dissatisfied with the quality of your cake, please contact The Cake House as soon as possible and we will review your concerns. If appropriate, we will provide a refund of up to 50% of the full order price, or in some cases a gift certificate towards a future purchase.
